And here's what Esperanza, an intermediate 2 student, has found out about this city.

WHERE IS VITEBSK?

The city of Vitbebsk, placed on the northeast of Belarus that in turn has borders with Russia, Lithuania an Latvia, was founded on 974 by the duchesse Olga of Kiev, coinciding with the peak of "the Varyags to Greeks trade route ", which established a route between Scandinavia, Kiev and the Byzantine Empire. Precisely for that reason Vitebsk is one of the oldest settlements in Europe.

Location of Belarus

Location of Vitebsk
The Varyags were vikings who came from Sweden during the Middle Ages but this term was used to refer to all the travellers of the sea, traders, pirates, etc regardless of their origin.

This trade route was probably established at the end of  XVIII century, reached its peak in 10th century and it was  abandoned in the 11th century with the appearance of new routes arisen from the Crusades.

Nowadays, the city of Vitebsk, with about 360.000 inhabitants,  is a powerful industrial , scientific and cultural centre of the Republic of Belarus; there is an airport and a very good road infrastructure and also several major international motorways run through the region. Like Santiago , Vitebsk retains a charming old town where there is a lot of cultural and leisure offer.

The Lake District, also known as The Lakesor Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells) and its associations with the early 19th century writings of Romantic poets like William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The Lake District
William Wordsworth
Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Here you have the quintessential Lake District poem: " I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by W. Wordsworth (1815). Enjoy!

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Ethnic groups from all corners of the world have a presence in Auckland, making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

The oldest sight to see is the fort which dates back to the year 1399. On the ramparts which are accessible on foot and in the excavated east round tower, visitors get an impression of the fort and grounds.
The fort is also the home of the Town and Industry Museum which is well worth a visit. The museum clearly illustrates the connection between social history and the history of industry.

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Opel Villas are situated between the fort and the Town Park and today house the Art Centre. Mainly works of classical Modern Art are exhibited here.
Only a few meters away from the Opel Villas, the Late Romantic Verna Park (Town Park) with its castle ruins and imitation mill tempts visitors to linger a while

Löwenplatz

Lowenplatz

On your tour of the town you shouldn’t miss the “memorial” on Löwenplatz. (Lion Square) It marks the place of Adam Opel’s first workshop and reminds us of its initial size in comparison to today’s factory.
